Injectables & Fillers

Dr. E. Ronald Finger and his skilled Nurse Dallas Sellars offer Neurotoxins (Botox & Dysport) and a variety of dermal fillers for facial enhancement and wrinkle reduction at New Youth Medical Spa in Savannah, Ga.

Dr. Finger also offers Injectables and fillers at his location in Bluffton SC.  Though injectables are often used in conjunction with Plastic Surgery, sometimes patients just want a temporary solution and opt to stick to injectables only.  Younger patients love the use of fillers to plump their lips and enhance their jawline.

HA (hyaluronic acid) fillers such as Restylane products or Juvederm products are temporary and last an average of 6-8 months or less depending on dosage, age, and lifestyle.  HA-based fillers are safe and can be reversed fairly easily.

More permanent fillers such as Juvederm Voluma (hard to reverse), and Bellafill (cannot be reversed), are often chosen by older clients that wish to reduce the frequency of their injectables. Younger patients with asymmetry or hollow cheeks can also benefit from a more permanent product.

Sculptra Aesthetic is another long-lasting solution that works a bit differently as it helps the body to stimulate collagen and produces gradual results. Sculptra Aesthetic is ideal for patients in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, and sometimes 60’s because Sculptra Aesthetic relies on collagen production within the patient’s own body. As you age collagen production diminishes and therefore Sculptra becomes less effective.

Injectables

Botox

Botox is a neurotoxin(made by Allergan) that has been used for decades to temporarily minimize frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.  Botox lasts an average of 3-4-months depending on dosage, age, and lifestyle.

How does Botox work?

Botox blocks nerve impulses of the muscles that are being injected, therefore temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause frown lines, crow’s feet, and so forth.  It takes about 5 to 7 days on average for the full effect of the Botox to take place. Only the muscles in the immediate area of the injection are affected.

How safe is Botox?

Very safe when injected by a trained medical professional that knows the muscles of the face and follows safety guidelines and proper dosages. Botox Cosmetic has an excellent safety record and has been referred to as the “aspirin of the 21st Century.”

Dysport

Dysport works much like Botox and is categorized as a neurotoxin (created by Galderma) that is used for the temporary reduction of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.  Some patients prefer Dysport over Botox and vice versa.

Dysport lasts 3-4-months on average though the formulation and unit measurement are a bit different, the results are similar.

Note: 60 units of Dysport are equivalent to 20 units of Botox. So, when you see the price point being a third of the cost, it is not really a third of the cost, because it takes 3 times the units to achieve the same results.

How Safe is Dysport?

Very safe when injected by a trained medical professional that knows the muscles of the face and follows safety guidelines and proper dosages. Dysport has an excellent safety record and has been Europe’s #1 product for many years.  Dysport is one of the top neurotoxins injected globally.

Juvederm Collection of Fillers

Allergan offers a variety of HA fillers in addition to Juvederm Voluma which is not a HA filler and is considered a 2-year solution for the mid-face.

The most commonly used products include Juvederm, Juvederm Ultra, and Juvederm Ultra Plus.

Juvederm Vollure is another HA filler that contains a moisture-binding molecule that keeps the soft tissues of the face plump, hydrated and youthful while stimulating collagen production. It is FDA approved for the treatment of nasolabial folds (smile lines) but is also used to smooth wrinkles around the mouth.

Juvederm Volbella contains the thinnest, most spreadable gel perfect to fill fine lip lines or even smooth the delicate area under the eyes. Both Juvederm Vollure and Volbella can also be used for subtle volume in the lips. If you prefer more volume opt for Juvederm or Juvederm Up.

Juvederm Voluma

Juvederm Voluma was specifically designed to restore a full, plump look to your cheeks. It is injected deep into the skin (on the bone) and thus can prevent sagging and contour your cheek lines. Because it works so deep in the skin, it can last longer than many other fillers; even other forms of Juvederm.  Juvederm Voluma lasts up to two years and is not easily reversed.

Juvederm Voluma is also the first filler to receive U.S. FDA approval for chin augmentation. This approval marks the second indication for the product, which was previously approved by the FDA in 2013 for cheek augmentation to correct age-related mid-face volume deficit.

Restylane Collection of Fillers

Restylane injectables are HA-based fillers (hyaluronic acid) and are used for filling and dermal lifting of the face and hands. Restylane-L (base product with lidocaine), Restylane Lyft, Defyne, and Refyne are commonly used by Plastic Surgery practices to enhance and fill various areas of the face. One of Dr. Finger’s favorite products to enhance the face is Restylane Lyft. Restylane Lyft can be used for midface, jawline definition and in small doses can be effective under the eyes (tear-trough filler).

Restylane Kysse is FDA approved as a long-lasting lip filler and is said to last up to 1 year. You can now plump up your lips and expect a minimum of 8-months results. Like Juvederm, Restylane products do not contain animal components, and therefore require no allergy testing prior to treatment.

Restylane Defyne

February of 2021 – Galderma announced that the FDA approved Restylane Defyne for chin augmentation. The product was approved after Juvederm Voluma received FDA approval for chin augmentation in 2020.

How long do Restylane products last?

Typically, 6 to 8 months on average depending on where it is injected, dosage, and which Restylane product is injected. Age and lifestyle also play a large role in how long any HA product will last.

Restylane injectables are not animal-based, so there’s no need for allergy testing
prior to treatment. Restylane injections usually take less than an hour from start to finish. (numbing cream and dental blocks add time to be effective).

Sculptra Aesthetic Injectable

Sculptra and Plasma Treatments are perfect for mature skin

Sculptra Aesthetic (formerly Sculptra) works differently from HA fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane because it produces a gradual effect and is often injected for volume loss in specific areas of the face or even in the hands. (temples, mid-face, jaw line). Sculptra Aesthetic is made of poly-L-lactic acid, which is a biodegradable, biocompatible synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades.

Poly-L-lactic acid is absorbed naturally by the body and has been used for years in dissolvable stitches. Since Sculptra Aesthetic does not contain any human or animal components, no allergy testing is needed prior to treatments. Its mode of action is to stimulate collagen production, which in turn re-volumizes the area of injection gradually. Sculptra Aesthetic can last up to two years depending on the dosage, area injected, life-style and age.

What happens during the Aging Process?

  • Loss of elasticity
  • Loss of the volume of the skin thickness and underlying fat
  • Loss of bone thickness

Often the loss of volume is more significant than the loss of elasticity. Sculptra Aesthetic is very effective in replacing the lost volume. This increase in volume diminishes the shadows that occur with age and elevates the face. Sculptra Aesthetic is also injected on the bone to increase the thickness of bone, as bone loss is a major cause of volume loss with age.

Rather than simply filling wrinkles, Sculptra Aesthetic can change the shape of a face back to a more youthful and symmetric shape by replacing the lost volume experienced with extreme weight loss or during the aging process. Sculptra is not instant and requires a follow-up visit with a second treatment within a month of the first injections.

Is Sculptra Aesthetic safe?

Sculptra Aesthetic is extremely safe, but much like any other filler it must be injected by a qualified skilled physician, NP, or RN, depending on each state’s requirement.  Dr. Finger uses  a cannula to inject Sculptra Aesthetic to achieve smoother results with less bruising and swelling. This treatment is exclusively performed by Dr. E. Ronald Finger.
